Black Bean Turkey Burgers

Black bean turkey burgers are the perfect summer meal with a healthy twist! They’re a little leaner than a regular burger and the black beans add some extra protein. Pair it with some French fries, or better yet, sweet potato fries! Enjoy!

Here is what you’ll need:

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound of turkey burger
  • 1 15 oz can of black beans
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon of ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon of mayo
  • 1 teaspoon Italian herb blend
  • 1/2 teaspoon of garlic salt
  • 1/2 cup of Italian style bread crumbs OR quick oats (sometimes I use a mixture of the two depending how much I have on hand)
  • Colby jack cheese slices or whichever type of cheese you prefer
  • 1 onion-sliced

Instructions:

  1. Slice a whole onion and sauté in a small pan with about 1/2 tablespoon of olive oil or butter, then set aside.
  2. Drain and rinse the beans and in a medium sized bowl (I like to use stainless steel for this), mash the beans with a potato masher. Add the burger, egg, ketchup, mayo, breadcrumbs, garlic salt and herbs. Mix together until all ingredients are combined.
  3. Patty the burgers. I usually make mine on the smaller side and this recipe will normally make 6-8 burgers, but make them as big as you like!
  4. Make them in a large pan on the stove with a little bit of olive oil, although you don’t need too much (or you could cook them on the grill if you want). Cook them on medium heat for about 4 minutes, then flip them and cook for a couple more minutes before I add the sautéed onion on top, (making sure the burger are no longer pink in the middle- you could use a meat thermometer if you want) and then melt the cheese slices over them.
  5. Place on burger buns of your choice and serve with fries! So good!
